Problem of corrosion resistance enhancement and building structures durability stays very important in case of repairs or renovation on operating enterprises and on newly established. It is a well-known fact that all acids and big amount of salts are aggressive towards cement stone. This type of corrosion takes place more often and weathering is the most intensive. The most vulnerable substance in cement is lime. But lime binding (by means of SiO2) does not exclude corrosion because it can restore due to the derogation from calcium hydrates.

Acids and some salts react with Са(ОН)2 and form new compounds which are highly water soluble or fragile (loose), crystallizing with significant change of substance volume.   Sometimes all of these happen simultaneously..

An example of Portland cement stone weathering by some acids:

Са(ОН)2 + НСI = CaCl + 2H2O

Са(ОН)2 + H2SO4 = CaSO4 + 2H2O

Adding extra target additives to Portland cement does not change anything greatly. The basic rule says: if binder is not resistant enough to the aggressive substance target additives will not save the whole situation. That is why we recommend to use special compounds with protective properties.

 

Polymersilicate compositions

A separate group is occupied by compositions based on liquid glass. They are not expensive, ecologically safe and do not require special equipment for preparing. Here belong the following polymersilicate compositions produced by our company: tile adhesive “Himflex HN” and caulking compound “Himflex HNM”.  After hardening polymersilicate compositions have good mechanical strength and extremely high acid resistance, fast strength development at early hardening stages. In comparison to andesite caulking compound (which was invented at the beginning of the previous century), polymersilicate compositions do not contain toxic sodium fluorosilicate and resist acids in low and high concentration. These improvements of polymersilicate compositions technical properties have become possible due to liquid glass modification.

The modification process lies in the following: silicic acid gel which is coagulable from liquid glass has cementitious properties. During the hardening process this silicic acid gel has finely porous structure that in its turn is additionally colmatated by polymeric additive. This let us enhance polymersilicate compositions corrosion resistance to water and dilute acids. Exemptions for polymersilicate compositions use are some mineral acids (hydrofluoric acid HF, hydrosilicofluoric acid H2SiF6) and alkalis solutions. As an additional protection from solutions of alkalis compositions for decorative framing of joints based on thermosetting resins are applied (Himflex 2K, himflex 2F, Himflex 3C).

 

Epoxy compounds

In contrast to polymersilicate compositions, epoxy compositions have much higher production cost, nevertheless their technical and technological properties are also much higher. This category of goods has the following benefits: high mechanical strength, lack of shrinkage cracking (dry residue after resin polymerization is 97-98 %) and more universal chemical resistance. After hardening modified epoxy has high resistance to mineral and organic acids in low and average concentrations, water, alkali, environment variables acid-alkali, oil, fat, oil products and some solvents. In contrast to phenol-formaldehyde resin (base of caulking compound Arzamit-5) epoxy composition after hardening does not emit harmful substances in air of the working area and can be applied in food industries (milk, beer and etc.).

 

Epoxy primers

Primers are primarily used for dedusting of concrete surface, as primer for epoxy coatings and as protective primer. They are also used for a wide spectrum of surfaces: concrete, metal and wood. We cannot but mention  Himflex Primer EP 01. The key feature of this epoxy composition is that it can be applied to dry or wet surface (residual moisture of concrete can be more than 15 %) only on condition of condensed moisture absence. Penetrating deep into the pores of concrete Himflex Primer EP 01 additionally binds free water on its surface. This valuable property let you apply additional protective finishing materials in the places where it has been unavailable before due to high humidity and threat of further material delamination.

  • Allows to create durable tile joints resistant to abrasion and severe mechanical loads;
  • Has high adhesion to different construction materials (ceramic, porcelain stoneware, glass mosaic, products made from fused basalt and steel);
  • Prevents shrinkage cracking all the way through the joint;
  • Exceeds 5 times cement tile joints in terms of elasticity;
